Lee Fidler

Biography

I was born and raised in Thunder Bay, Ontario. My interest in art began at an early age and was self-taught through trial and error over the years. I began first painting in oils. When I first tried watercolour, I was completely captivated by the charm, spontaneity and transparency of the medium. Since then, I have painted exclusively with watercolour. I completed Basic Design at Lakehead University and then began to enrol in workshops, many of them have included trips to wonderful and interesting places. These workshops have been conducted by numerous world renowned Canadian and American artists. My work has been published in "Watercolours without Boundaries" by American artist Karlyn Holman.

My paintings are representational and very detailed. In order to achieve the realism I want, each piece takes several hours to complete. It begins with an idea that gradually develops into a plan which is then composed into a design using reference materials in the form of my own photographs and sketches. Once the drawing is completed to my satisfaction, it is then transferred on to the watercolour paper. Although I use a variety of approaches and techniques to achieve the necessary effect, for the most part I am a direct painter, using few gimmicks.

Each painting I do is inspired by something in my environment that I love. It is my desire to recreate these fascinating and beautiful subjects so that my customers can bring them into their homes to enjoy. I can only hope they get as much pleasure viewing them as I have had in creating them.
